Unitarian Universalist United Nations Office

The Unitarian Universalist United Nations Office (UU-UNO) is the major channel for the UUA to world affairs and the United Nations. UU-UNO has two functions.

1. Its four-person staff and volunteers represent the UUA and the International Association for Religious Freedom at UN Headquarters. Through daily contact with delegates and UN staff members, the UU-UNO works with like-minded organizations to monitor and support UN work in disarmament, human rights, and environmental protection.
2. The UU-UNO informs and mobilizes UUs across the continent, keeping them informed about the UN and showing how they can help the UN to be more effective. A network of more than 400 local and district contact persons, known as envoys, links UU-UNO with congregations across the continent.

The UU-UNO newsletter, Window on the World, is sent to member congregations and contains articles about the work of the UU and its agencies and encourages UU-UNO members to support the UN. UU-UNO members are invited to an annual two-and-a-half-day spring seminar, which includes the UU-UNO Annual Meeting. At the seminar, UUs meet with UN staff and diplomatic representatives to discuss timely issues.

The UU-UNO produces and distributes program materials for the observance of United Nations Sunday, normally held on the Sunday closest to United Nations Day—October 24, the Anniversary of the adoption of the UN Charter in 1945.

A three-day youth conference on disarmament is held each Fall. Twenty-six high school youth are chosen to attend, and every effort is made to have all UUA districts represented.
